Obituary for Mary M. Halter

Mary M. Halter, 88, of Vincennes, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2024 in Bloomington, IN at IU Health Hospice House. Mary was born March 20, 1935 in Knox County, the daughter of Henry and Emma Wetzel Holscher. She was a graduate of Decker High School. On November 4, 1956, she married Francis H.J. Halter, and they made their life together for nearly 68 years.

Mary was the founder of many family traditions, but Christmas time held a special place in her heart and her house. Christmas decorations were prevalent in the Halter house, but above all else, Mary exemplified the Christmas spirit of gathering with loved ones. She was a bucky, sharp-witted competitor as shown through her love of euchre and Big Ten basketball.  She was an avid IU fan but as a realist, would often declare an IU loss in the first quarter and never failed to comment when Tom Izzo was a cry-baby. One of Mary’s most expressed ways of showing love was through food and cooking together as a family in her designated role as Kitchen Supervisor. There were always drinks and snacks for game day and every day, Mary made sure the snack cart was full and everyone had lots of snackies to pick from. Mary loved chocolate and her preferred drink was wine, and her family knew that the wine cooler in Mary’s Kitchen was always well-stocked with the finest wines Trader Joe’s has to offer and the bowl on the counter was always full with M&Ms.

She formerly worked at Porter & Brumfield in Princeton, IN and American National Bank in Vincennes. She worked with her husband at D&H Glass as a service coordinator where she shared her personal passion of crafting intricate pieces of stained glass. Mary held membership in the K of C Ladies Auxiliary, St. John the Baptist’s Altar Society, Tri Kappa Sorority, St. John’s Elementary PTO and was an active member of the Christian Education Foundation. She celebrated her children and community as an avid supporter of the Vincennes Germanfest, a room mother at St. John’s and Flaget Elementary, a 4H and a Girl Scout Leader. Mary, alongside Francis, considered her biggest accomplishment to be her children and grandchildren and looked forward to family vacations at Disney World and later at South Haven, MI. Mary loved to travel, whether it was overseas in Germany or around Vincennes shopping at yard sales with her friends. She truly exemplified being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and was devout in her faith.

Mary is survived by her husband, Francis Halter, their children, Cheryl Halter (Becky, deceased) of Plainfield, IN, Karen Gelb (Dan) of Indianapolis, IN, Ron Halter  & Don Halter of Vincennes, IN, and Amy Norris (Tom) of Ellettsville, IN. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Audrey Gelb, Sadie Gelb, Emma Halter-Mann, Carl Norris, Henry Norris, Joe Norris and her beloved daytime canine companion Porter Wayne Halter. A brother, Charles “Short” Holscher also survives. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Hernry and Emma Holscher, her brothers William, Walter, Myrle, Maurice, Henry and Paul Holscher and her sisters Ruth Primus, Betty Williams, Loretta Halter and Emma Purcell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday February 16, 2024 at St. John Catholic Church at 11:00 AM with Fr. Tony Ernst officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of services at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Christian Education Foundation or IUF Miles for Myeloma.

“Always remember there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name.” November 4, 1956
