Obituary for Ruth N. Strahley
Ruth N. Strahley, 97, Bicknell, IN, passed away Tuesday March 13, 2018 at 12:35 PM at the Good Samaritan Hospital with her family at her bedside. Ruth was born August 20, 1920 in Orange County, IN the daughter of Rev. Ernest E and Ruby Kitterman Crowder. She was a graduate of Lawrenceburg High School and on April 9, 1929 she married Rev. Lester I. Strahley and they made their life together for 57 years until his death on October 5, 1996. She was a member of the Bicknell Wesleyan Church and was active in various church events. She was formerly the missionary treasurer for many years, a faithful Sunday School teacher and organist for the church. Ruth and her family were active in the ministry of Orleans Wesleyan Camp Ground. She was a devoted pastor’s wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother.
Ruth is survived by her children, Beverly Gray, and her husband Gary of Robinson, IN, Ronald Strahley, and his wife Monica of Auburndale, FL, Kaye Melcho of Bicknell, IN and Debi Sumner, and her husband James of Nashville, IN. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Paul Crowder, and his wife Carolyn of Grafton, OH and a sister Mary Frame of Nashua, NH.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Lester I. Strahley, her parents Rev. Ernest E and Ruby Crowder, 3 brothers, Ernest, Charles and David Crowder and 7 sisters, Alloise Fulwider, Ethel Chapman, Esther Charles, Alice Bradley, Lorene Crowder and 2 sisters in infancy, Elsie and Amanda Crowder.
Funeral services will be celebrated Saturday March 17, 2018 at 11:30 AM at the Duesterberg-Fredrick Wampler Shaw Chapel with Rev. Landon Yowell and Rev. Mark Reed officiating. Ruth will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Bicknell Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday March 16, 2018 from 4 to 8 PM at the funeral home and prior to the services on Saturday. Memorial contributions can be made to the Orleans Wesleyan Camp Ground, P.O. Box 174, Orleans, IN 47452. Duesterberg-Fredrick Wampler Shaw is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
