Barbara Jane Mayall, 89, Oaktown, known by many as Janie, passed away on Friday, Aug. 2, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospital. Janie was born July 18, 1935, in Vincennes to Goldie and Gladys (Wade) Phillippe. A proud graduate of the Lincoln High School Class of 1953, she went on to marry Jim R. Mayall on July 21, 1956. They were married 67 years and two days when Jim tragically died from injuries sustained in a car accident on July 23, 2023. Janie and Jim had two children, Kevin in 1957 and Elizabeth in 1962.
Janie had an immense love for animals, something she shared with her granddaughter Lindsay. They were always bringing home a stray dog or cat. She was a member of the Francis Vigo Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for more than 50 years and the American Legion. Jim and Janie loved attending dirt track and NASCAR races with their family.
Janie owned and operated Mayall's Market and Greenhouse and Snack Bar for many years with her family. She was known to make the best milkshakes. After closing the snack bar, she went on to work at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility as a cook and a correctional officer.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim and son, Kevin, who passed away July 14, 2024.
Janie is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Mark) Owens and granddaughter, Lindsay J. Owens (Brandon Edens-Magner) who cared for her the last several years as well as her beloved Corgi, Buster.
A memorial gathering for Janie will be held Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024 from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Oaktown Community Building.
