Obituary for Delia Irene Murphy Owens Delia Irene Murphy Owens, 89, formerly of Terre Haute and Vincennes, passed away in Indianapolis, IN Monday November 5, 2012 at 11:30 PM. She was born February 16, 1923 in Vincennes the daughter of Ulysses S. Sr. and Wilhelmina Utterbach Murphy. She was a 1941 graduate of Lincoln High School and upon graduation, she began her 50-year career in Nursing in Chicago, IL at the Franklin Boulevard Hospital School of Nursing graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1945. She married Ralph Owens on February 20, 1945 and they made their life together for over 66 years. Following her marriage to Ralph, she was employed by Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes. They moved to Terre Haute and she joined the staff at Union Hospital first as a Clinical Instructor in the school of nursing then as a staff nurse. In the late 60s, she enrolled as a student at Indiana State University, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelors Degree in the Science of Nursing, and at the time of her retirement in 1985, she had been the Director of Hospital In-Service Education at Union Hospital for several decades. Among her many volunteer efforts were Indiana State Hospital Education and Training (ISHET), the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, the Terre Haute Women's Department Club, and the Fair Garden Club. Following her retirement, she and Ralph traveled extensively in Ireland, visited the legendary home of the Murphy clan and even went upside down and backwards to kiss the Blarney stone She is survived by her sons, Mark T. Owens, and his wife Jayne of Zionsville, IN and Kurt S. Owens of Indianapolis, IN. Her grandchildren Scott Owens DVM, and his wife Eron and Jenny Owens-Cripe and her husband Steve. Her great grandchildren Emerson Rachel Cripe and Hayden Alexander Owens. Her brothers, James �Sam� Murphy and Francis �Hank� Murphy both of Vincennes and her sisters, Nellie McClure-Hill, and her husband, David of Vincennes and Nancy Sandefer of Summerville, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Owens on March 3, 2011, her parents, 3 brothers, Ulysses S. Murphy Jr., Robert Glenn Murphy and Thomas L. Murphy in infancy and a sister Mary Alice Murphy Ruble. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday November 8, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Anderson officiating. She will be laid to rest near her family in the Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until the time of services at the Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home.
