Obituary for Dorothy M. Prout

Dorothy Marie Stump Prout passed away on November 9, 2024, at Oak Village Nursing Home in Oaktown, Indiana. She was born on June 28, 1932, in Goshen, Indiana to the late Russell and Marice Stump. She graduated from Goshen High School in 1950 and received a BA degree from Bethel College in 1954. She married Earl Prout, her husband of 68 years, on May 26, 1956. Dorothy taught piano and theory at Owosso Bible College. After earning an MS degree from Indiana State University in 1966, she taught elementary school in South Bend, Marion, and Seymour Indiana for 31years. Dorothy was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Indiana, a past president of Seymour Tri Kappa, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Her varied interests began at home where she diligently raised her children, managed her teaching responsibilities, extended her full-fledged support to her husband’s numerous musical endeavors, and often visited extended family. Dorothy delighted her nieces and nephews with gifts of love reflecting her warmth and love for them. She considered every family event as a time to celebrate. Her favorite season was Christmas when every room was filled to overflowing with presents for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She shared her hospitality throughout her community of friends, clubs, and philanthropic organizations. She was an avid fan of Indiana University Athletics. Dorothy was a competitive game enthusiast and fostered a culture of comradery, empathy, sportsmanship and joy for all who participated. She affectionately bestowed nicknames upon all her family.

She is survived by her husband: Earl D. Prout; a son: Kim (Annie) Prout of Vincennes, IN; two daughters: Koral (Richard) Rosser of Lancaster, SC and Krystal Worth of Seymour, IN; Grandchildren: Jessica (Nic) Nielson of Lancaster, SC, Benjamin (Courtney) Chaney of Monroe, NC, Mitchell (Jamie) Prout of Sellersburg, IN, David (Erla) Chaney of Pageland, SC, Nicholas Prout of Vincennes, IN, Kirstyn Chaney of Charlotte, NC, Kathryn (Matthew) Cuthbertson of Monroe, NC, Kelsey (Brandon) Carden of Indianapolis, IN, Jenna (Tyler) Simmons of Vincennes, IN, Karalyn Chaney of Lancaster, SC; Great-grandchildren: Nehemiah, Noelani, and Ezekiel Nielson; Jude, Silas, and Cole Chaney; Emma and Hannah Prout; Ryle, Ophilia and Raylan Chaney; Arden, Jonas, and baby Susanna, due in 2025 Cuthbertson; Jack Simmons; and Bennett Carden. She has one brother: Daniel (Faye) Stump of Albuquerque, NM, two sisters-in-law: Jan Stump of Goshen, IN, and Jeanne (Jerry) Garber of Vandalia, MI, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: Lowell (Evelyn) Stump, Dr. Walter (Jeannie) Stump, and David Stump; one sister: Eloise (Merl) Holderman, Son-in-law: Philip Chaney.

Private funeral services will be conducted at Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home in Vincennes, IN.
