Obituary for Esther L. Summitt
Obituary for Esther L. Summitt Esther Louise Summitt, age 92, passed away at 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, at her home. Esther was born on October 27, 1923, in Bicknell, Indiana, the first-born daughter of Jesse and Eva McNew. She was a lifelong resident of Bicknell. Growing up on east Second Street, Esther and her sister, Anna Mae, spent much of their time playing and working at the railroad express agency with their father. Many people in town fondly knew Esther as Tommie and her sister as Billie. These nicknames were given to the tomboy duo by the neighborhood veterinarian, Doc Carico, and stayed with them into their adult lives. Esther graduated from Bicknell High School as a member of the Class of 1941. She worked several years in the community, as the clerk for the Bicknell trustees office and later, at Tresslers dime store. On March 25, 1944, Esther married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth A. Summitt. They were married 63 years and lived together in their home on Charles Street. Kenny preceded her in death in 2007. Esther will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, a caring daughter and sister, and a patient wife. She was incredibly devoted to her family, and she spent her life putting others before herself. Esther was without a doubt a people person. Her charismatic smile and quick wit could make anyone feel at home, and she often went out of her way to help any person or animal in need. Some of Esthers favorite pastimes include gardening, watching birds in the backyard, crocheting, needlework, and visiting with family and friends. She was also a handy carpenter and seamstress. Esther was active in the local community. She was a former attendant and Sunday school teacher at the Church of the Nazarene, participated as a den mother for Cub Scouts, and volunteered for the parent teacher association. Esther is survived by her two sons, Rodney Eugene Summitt and his wife, Denise, of Oaktown, IN and Larry Wayne Summitt and his wife, Anita, of Bicknell, IN; two grandchildren, Terry Summitt, of Olney, IL and Stacey Summitt-Mann and her husband, Darren, of Indianapolis, IN; great-grandchild Hunter Summitt, of Olney, IL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, and sister. Friends may visit with the family Thursday, October 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Dusterberg-Fredrick Wampler-Shaw Chapel in Bicknell. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, October 16 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Robert Strain presiding. Burial will follow at Bicknell Memorial Cemetery.
