Leslie Calvin Chanley 89, passed away at his residence October 3, 2022 at 7:30 AM with his family at his bedside. Les was born October 17, 1932 in Knox County the son of Adam Leslie and Wilma I. Abell Chanley. Les graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951. He served in the United States Navy from 1951-1953 aboard the USS Iowa while serving in the Korean War. Les married Mary Ann Prout on November 14, 1953 and they made their life together for 68 years. After returning to Vincennes, Les joined the Vincennes Police Department. He spent 20 years rising through the ranks to earn the title of major. After retirement from the Police Department, Les worked for Vincennes University for 16 years. Les was a member of the First Christian Church, FOP and American Legion. He also coached FOP little league baseball for several years. Les was also a proud supporter of the Vincennes Lincoln Alices and Vincennes University Trailblazers. You could always find Les and Mary Ann at all the local sporting events cheering for their teams. He was a diehard fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. Les loved to hunt and fish in his years after retirement. Les truly loved spending time with his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved his new puppy Lucy.
Les is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Ann (Prout) Chanley, son Philip L. Chanley, son Michael A. Chanley, daughter Sally A. Catt, daughter Mary Jo Dillard (Randy), and daughter Lesly M. Shappard (Richard). Les is survived by siblings Sue Allen (husband, Bob), Rosa Lee Provines, and Cheryl Jones and many nieces and nephews. Les is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Jennifer Spann (Evan), Philip Jr. Chanley, Seth Chanley, Chad Jones, Andrew Chanley (Holly), Cole Chanley (Tracee), Karisa Bauer (Matt), Kaleh Hannuksela (Gage), Ashten Gholson (Matt), Dylan Dillard (Tori), Rachael Shappard, Luke Shappard, and Noah Shappard. Les is survived by 22 great-grandchildren (2 more arriving soon).
Les is preceded in death by his parents, Adam L. and Wilma I. Chanley, along with siblings Betty Reitmeyer, Dixie Staley, and Daniel R. Chanley.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday October 10, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home with Dr. Lanny C. Lawler and Rev. Bill Pieper officiating. He will be laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday October 9, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Gravesite honors will be conducted by the Vincennes Police Department to honor his service to the community. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to The First Christian Church or Vincennes Lincoln Athletic Department.
