Obituary for Charles K. “Kenny” Newton

Charles K. “Kenny” Newton, 75, of Monroe City, IN passed away Friday June 21, 2019 at 10:33 PM with his family at his bedside. Kenny was born December 25, 1943 in Vincennes the son of Grover and Thelma Steimel Newton. He was a 1961 graduate of Central Catholic High School and his devotion to his country he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served 26 years having attaining the highest rank of a non commissioned officer, Master Gunnery Sergeant. He served two tours in Vietnam during his career and served his fellow veterans as Veterans Service Officer for Knox County, IN. He married Linda Haag on April 24, 1964 and they made their life together for 55 years. He was a member of the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, IN, VFW, where he was the first Vietnam Veteran to join, 40 et 8, American Legion and the Marine Corps League. He was devoted to the Marine Corps “Toy’s for Tot’s” program and lived the motto, “Semper Fi”. He was truly a Marine through and through.

He is survived by his wife, Linda K. Newton, their children, Nancy Gatton, and her husband David of Louisville, KY and Steve Newton of Greenwood, IN. His grandchildren, Nathan Newton, Jenna Newton and Zach Newton. He is also survived by a sister Sharon Harris, and her husband Tim of Fowler, IN.

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Thelma Newton and a brother, Michael “Fig” Newton.

Mass of Christian will be celebrated Monday July 1, 2019 at 10:00 AM at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, IN with Fr. Frank Renner officiating. He will be laid to rest in Marion National Cemetery, Marion IN on Tuesday July 2, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. with military honors by the U.S. Marine Corps. The family will receive friends on Sunday June 30, 2019 at Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM EST. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the USMC program “Toy’s for Tot’s “ through the funeral home. Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home is honored to assist Master Gunnery Sergeant Charles K. “Kenny” Newton’s family during their time of loss.
