Obituary for Mary Margaret "Margie" Witsman


Mary Margaret "Margie" Witsman, 95, of Decker, IN, passed away December 25, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Margie was born October 21, 1927 in Vincennes, IN the daughter of David and Norine Frey Speth. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School and she married Marlin "Butter" Witsman on May 7, 1949 and they made their life together for 50 years until his death on December 25, 1999. She and her husband owned Band Mill Store for many years, she worked at Fort Knox Liquor and they owned the Decker Grocery store, in Decker, IN. She was a member of St. John/St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and she was formerly the secretary of the Decker Community Center.


Margie is survived by her children, Mike Witsman of Decker, IN, Paula Lane, and her husband Dale of Decker, IN, Lisa Harvey of Decker, IN, Ronnie Witsman of Allendale, IL and W. Jeannie Manning, and her husband Raymond of Freelandville, IN. She was also blessed with 10 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Lois Speth of Allendale, IL and several nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Marlin "Butter" Witsman, a granddaughter, Ashley Witsman, a daughter in law, Lorrie Witsman, her parents, 2 brothers, David Speth and Conrad "Connie" Speth and a sister, Betty Brackin.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday December 30, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. John Catholic Church with Fr. Tony Ernst officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday December 29, 2022 at Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and prior to the service on Friday. Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Good Samaritan Hospice. Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home is honored to assist the Witsman family during their time of loss
