Obituary for Richard J. “Dick” Dognaux
Richard J. “Dick” Dognaux, 67, of Lawrenceville, IL, passed away Thursday January 10, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Hospital with his wife at his bedside. Dick was born December 3, 1951 in Vincennes, IN the son of Rene J. Jr. and Dorothy J. Opell Dognaux. He was a lifelong member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, a 1969 graduate of Central Catholic High School and in 1974 from Indiana State University having attained a Bachelors of Science in Business. He began his career working for Vincennes Steel and later worked at Vincennes University. His focus in life was a strong work ethic that was mentored by his grandfather, Clarence Opell. He was taught to complete every endeavor till the job was done. He enjoyed living on the river beginning in 1983, where he met his future wife, Chandra Bauer. Dick and Chandra were married on April 4,1990 and through their married life they served as foster parents to 7 children. They fell in love with those kids and made 5 of them part of their family. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, former member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, he was a coach of the women’s softball league having taken his team to the State finals. Through the years he coached his boys in the Lawrence County Little League and his commitment to his wife and children were at the center of his world. He and Chandra began to acquire rental property and started a residential rental business, C & D Rentals. His commitment to his job, his wife and son’s were uppermost on his list of importance.
Dick is survived by his wife, Chandra Dognaux, their sons, Jonathan “JD” Dognaux of Lawrenceville, IL, Dylan Dognaux of Bridgeport, IL, Daniel Dognaux, James Dognaux and Jordan Dognaux still at home. His father, Rene J. Dognaux Jr. of Vincennes, His sisters and brothers, Kay Ziegler, and her husband Jim of Vincennes, Jeff Dognaux, and his wife Kim Cooper of Indianapolis, IN, Julie Stocker, and her husband Keith of Lawrenceville, IL, John Dognaux, and his wife Angela Ray of Jeffersonville, IN and Susan Dognaux, and her husband Derrick Beasley of Louisville, KY.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Opell Dognaux, his maternal grandparents, Clarence and Merna Opell and his paternal grandparents, Rene J. and Nellie Dognaux Sr.
A Memorial Mass to celebrate his life will be held Monday January 28, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the St. Francis Xavier (Old Cathedral) Catholic Church with Fr. Donald Ackerman officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the Mass at the church. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Dognaux Boy‘s College Education Fund at the church.
