Robert Edward Mallory, “Bob” 96, of Vincennes, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Robert was born July 18, 1922 in Vincennes the son of Paul D. Mallory and Ruth Martin Pressig. He was a 1939 graduate of Lincoln High School and upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during WW II in the Pacific theater where during the battle of Guadalcanal he was wounded and received the Purple Heart in 1942.
Upon returning to Vincennes after the war, Robert served his community serving as a Police Officer. He built and operated the Dinky Links miniature golf course across from Gregg Park. He then opened the Skyline Bar across the Memorial Bridge next to V U Aviation Building. His next venture was Westport Boats that he located across the road from the Skyline Bar in 1958. What started as a boat shop, then became an Import Sport Car Dealership selling, Fiat’s, Sunbeam’s, Jaguar’s, MG’s, Austin Healey’s, and Maserati’s. In 1961 the dealership became Westport Auto Sales featuring, Plymouth automobiles and later adding Chrysler and Dodge dealerships. Robert retired from Westport Auto Sales in 1984 and he returned to the dealership in 2001 when he came out of retirement and partnered with his daughter, Adrienne and son-in-law Paul Yochum to open Haubstadt Chrysler.
Robert was friends with everyone he met. He loved playing gin rummy with his family, his buddies at the Elks and later at Fox Ridge Manor. He was a Lifetime member of the Lawrenceville Elks, Moose, Harmony Society and the VFW.
Robert is survived by his daughters, Adrienne Mallory Yochum, and her husband Paul, of Vincennes, IN and Barbara Mallory Dreyer of Kansas City, KS., his son’s, Robert Craig Mallory, and his wife Priscilla Townsend of Alvarado, TX, Philip Morris Brandt and his companion Peter Baro of Royal Palm Beach, FL and Raymond Kapps Brandt, and his wife Judy of Newport Coast, CA. His Grandchildren, John Robert Yochum, Jeffery Brandt, David Brandt, September Trible, Kyle Mallory and Nicholas Mallory. He is also survived by 9 Great-Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great-Grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Helen Kapps Mallory in 2004, his son David Lee Mallory in 2017, who with the Airborne Rangers received the Silver Star for valor in combat, his sister Pauline Lenahan in 2016 and his long time friend and companion, Barbara Gray in 2018.
Services to celebrate his life will be conducted Tuesday January 29, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home with Rod Carie officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his wife Helen in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until the time of services at 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
