Obituary for Virginia Dare (Spore) Robinson
Virginia Dare (Spore) Robinson, 96, passed away at Stonecroft Health Campus in Bloomington, Ind., on Dec.   13, 2020. Virginia was born on April 19, 1924 in Oaktown, Ind., to Herschell Sr. and Bertha (Payton) Spore. Virginia graduated from Lincoln High School in Vincennes in 1942. She married William Joseph Robinson on December 19, 1941 during World War II while Bill was in the Army. They were married 60 years. Bill passed away December 2001. She worked in the dress shop business during the war in Hattiesburg, MS, Jacksonville, FL and Alexandria, LA. She returned to Vincennes in 1943 and became manager of the “Bob Lee” dress shop on Main Street. She quit work in 1948 before the birth of daughters Lana Jayne and Lois Jenai. The family moved to Ellettsville IN in 1954 and Virginia did a number of volunteer activities: writing for the Ellettsville Journal weekly newspaper, Advertising Chairperson and assorted duties for Ellettsville Fall Festival, PTA President for Ellettsville School Corp., American Legion Auxiliary President and Legion Auxiliary Jr. President, and Sunday School teacher and choir singer at Ellettsville Baptist Church.
She also served as head cook for Ellettsville School, Precinct Committee Person for Monroe County, Ind., rang bells for Salvation Army every year and served as a 4-H Leader.
In 1964 she became manager of the Val-U Dress Shop in Bloomington. She worked for Alden’s department store as a buyer. She left after one year and returned to the Val-U until it closed in 1973. She began working for Kahn’s Clothing Co. until retiring in 1983.
She and Bill then moved back the Vincennes area and she continued her volunteer work, which included Good Samaritan Hospital, Senior Citizens Center, and she served as a guide for the Vincennes State Historical Site. She also was a member of the Kitchen Band, serving as secretary, booking events, organizing transportation and providing other clerical services.
Her memberships included American Business Women of America, American Legion Auxiliary, Beta Sigma Phi member serving as Treasurer, secretary and vice president, 8/40 member, and received the 1994 Older Woman of the Year award for Area 13A Agency on Aging in Knox County.
Her passion in life was music. She enjoyed playing with the Kitchen Band and performing as a dancer with the Twilight Tappers. She would perform at the drop of a hat. In 2003 she began a new chapter of her life with companion Max Steimel of Vincennes. They enjoyed 16 years of companionship in traveling, dancing, family time and socializing.


She is survived by her daughters Lana (Mike Gooldy) Vierdag and Lois Fields, both of Bloomington, IN; grandsons Tom Sink, of St. Louis, MO, Joe (Lindy) Sink, of Marine, IL, Adam van de Bossche, of Indianapolis and Joe Branam, of Bloomington; great-grandchildren Brittany (Josh) Lampe, Alyssa and Brandy van de Bossche, Ben and Sam Sink, and Nova Branam; and great-great-grandchildren Peyton and TJ Lampe; and many nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Bill; her parents; siblings Herschell Spore, Jr., Robert Spore, Eddie J. Spore, and Ruby Darlene Laue.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be scheduled later in 2021 at Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Homes in Vincennes, located at 521 Vigo St. Online condolences may be shared at duesterbergfredrick.com
