Obituary for William J. "Bill" Becher
William J. "Bill" Becher, 88, of Vincennes passed away Monday May 10, 2021 at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Bill was born April 22, 1933 in St. Meinrad, IN the son of Herbert and Frances Meyer Becher. He was a graduate of Dale High School and a graduate of Indiana School of Mortuary Science. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in Graves Registration. Bill married Patricia Laakman on September 27, 1958 and they made their life together for nearly 63 years. Bill retired as a superintendent at Vincennes Steel Corp after 42 years. He was a member of the Old Cathedral Catholic Church, former member of the K of C, Elks and Harmony Society. He participated in the 11th Honor Flight in 2019, which was the last Honor Flight to take place before the pandemic.
Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia Becher, their children,
Joyce McDowell, and her husband Mark of Wakarusa, IN, Elaine Decker, and her husband Eric of Milton, GA. and a daughter-in-law, Michelle Becher of Alpharetta, GA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Blain McDowell and his wife Casey, Aaron McDowell and his wife Lindsey, Cole Becher, Hallee Becher, Jenna Decker and Bailee Decker. His great-grandchildren, Paige McDowell, Brooke McDowell and Thea McDowell. He is also survived by his sisters, Germaine Graman of Vincennes, IN, Rebecca Price of Chrisney, IN, Judy Doyle (Jerry) of Vincennes, IN and Nancy Lasher (David) of Fulda, IN. He will be missed by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his only son Mark Becher, his parents, brothers, Lee Becher, Frank Becher and Don Becher and a sister Virlee McMahan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday May 15, 2021 at 11 AM at Duesterberg- Fredrick Funeral Home with Father Tony Ernst officiating. He will be laid to rest in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 AM until the time of service at Duesterberg- Fredrick Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to St. Vincent DePaul or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society @lls.org.
