Obituary for William R. "Bill" Toth
Obituary for William Robert (Bill) Toth William Robert (Bill) Toth, 92, of Vincennes passed peacefully at Bridgepointe Health Campus on Thursday, June 9, 2016. He was born in Bruceville, Indiana on March 16, 1924 to Michael and Elizabeth Toth. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942, serving as a class officer and was the oldest surviving LHS letterman, playing baseball and basketball. He attended Vincennes University and St. Louis University and was a member of the 1949 freshman basketball team. He was active in youth sports, coaching Boys League baseball and church league basketball teams for several years. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in the 66th Infantry (Black Panther) Division during W.W. II, seeing action in France. He was the last surviving member of 15 soldiers from Knox County to serve in the division. He married Margaret Claire (Peggy) Vogenthaler on June 23,1956 and they had six sons. They were together for over 59 years in Vincennes until her death on July 16, 2015. He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Vincennes. He owned and operated Knox County Beverage for over 50 years and was a member of the National Beer Wholesalers Association for nearly 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, and held memberships in DAV, VFW, 40&8, and Knights of Columbus. He served as the liaison for the USS Vincennes Association, coordinating many of the meetings and activities for the former WWII sailors and their families for their annual reunion and memorial. He was instrumental in getting the third Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser (CG-49) named Vincennes and getting the monument honoring the four USS Vincennes ships erected on the George Rogers Clark Memorial grounds. He is survived by his four sons, Tom and Paula of Spring, Texas; Jim and Lynn of Chrisney, Indiana; John and Lori of Clermont, Florida; Dave and Susie of Vincennes and daughter-in-law Diane of Edinburg. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brothers Michael Toth, Jr., and Alexander Toth; and two sons: Timothy William Toth of Edinburgh, Indiana and Daniel Robert Toth of Vincennes. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Tuesday June 14, 2016 at The Old Cathedral Catholic Church with Fr. David Fleck officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday June 13, 2016 from 5 to 8 PM at the Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home. The family requests donations in his memory to be sent to Indiana Veterans Home, 3851 N. River Road, Lafayette, IN 47906 or at the funeral home.
