Betty (Shank) Dailey, RN, 91 a cornerstone of compassion and healthcare in the Vincennes community, passed away peacefully today, August 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and the community she spent nearly seven decades serving. Born with a natural calling to comfort others, Betty’s nursing journey began with a childhood promise. Following the passing of her mother when Betty was just seven years old, she resolved to dedicate her life to medical service. She went on to graduate from Sumner High School and earned her nursing degree from Vincennes University in 1957. For 40 years, Betty served as a dedicated OB/GYN delivery nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes. To thousands of Knox County mothers and newborns, she was a steady, comforting presence during life’s most vulnerable and joyful milestones. Even after her formal retirement from the hospital in 1998, Betty's mission did not end; she spent an additional five years as a visiting nurse, guiding at-risk mothers and infants through the realities of poverty and health challenges with unwavering grace. Her exceptional dedication was recognized during Nurse’s Week when Good Samaritan Hospital honored her with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award—a testament to a career defined by humanity, courage, and heart. Betty often shared that nursing was never just a job, but a lifelong calling that she gave her whole heart to. Outside of her uniform, Betty was a devoted mother and grandmother, proudly watching her own daughter and granddaughter follow in her footsteps into the nursing profession. She remained a beloved sister to her 1957 nursing classmates, meeting with them weekly for decades. Betty’s legacy of selflessness, resilience, and profound empathy will continue to live on through the generations of families she brought into this world and the loved ones she leaves behind. Betty married John Dailey on April 1, 1957 and they made their life together for 58 years.

Betty is survived by her children, Susan Goodman of Indianapolis, IN, John Charles Dailey of Vincennes, IN and Kathy Swalls of Nashville, TN. Her grandchildren, Karl (Abby) Goodman, Ryan (Meredith) Swalls, Adam (Abby) Swalls, Hannah (Cade) Wolf, Sarah (Dan Gammoh) Swalls, her great grandchildren, Ethan Swalls, Cora Swalls, Duke Swalls and Walter Swalls. A sister, Mary Grove of Sumner, IL, and a sister in law, Ann Shank of Lawrenceville, IL also survives her.

She is reunited in peace with her cherished husband, John M. Dailey, who preceded her in death in May 2017, her parents, Henry and Marguerite (Haines) Shank, her brothers, Norman (Bud) Shank, William Shank, John Shank and a sister, Evelyn Brewer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday August 27, 2026 at !:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Tony Ernst officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 12:30 PM at Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
