Jim R. Mayall, 88, Oaktown, known by many as simply Rabbit, the name his granddaughter, Lindsay, gave him, passed away July 23, 2023 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after being hit by a vehicle
Involved in a high-speed chase on July 21. Born July 2, 1935, in Oaktown to Raymond and Vivian (Williams) Mayall, Jim graduated from Oaktown High School in 1953 and on July 21, 1956, he married Barbara Jane (Janie) Phillippe. They welcomed their son, Kevin in 1957 and daughter, Elizabeth in 1962. Jim was a simple man. He loved the land the watching things grow both in the greenhouse and in the
Field. In fact, Friday morning, he had been out spraying the melon field and making plans with Elizabeth and Lindsay on where to plant the fall crop of green beans, turnips and Chinese cabbage. For many years, Jim raised sweet corn and green beans for Stokley in addition to melons and other fruits and vegetables. He was still involved in the daily operations of the family business, Mayall's Market and Greenhouse.
Over the years, he had also worked for Aubrey Umberger, Jack Phegley and Bill Rooksbury as a truck driver and at Dix Enterprise, Farmersburg Mine and most recently Sunrise Coal as a security guard in the evenings.
Jim is survived by his wife Janie; son, Kevin (Sally) Mayall of Greencastle, daughter, Elizabeth (Mark) Owens of Oaktown; granddaughters Lindsay J. Owens (Brandon) of Oaktown; Megan Mayall, Heather Judy and Amanda Sutherlin all of Greencastle; great-grandchildren Melody Mayall, Lane Rady, Becca Rady, Kaylee Rowlings, Matthew Perkins, Lillian Perkins and Nicholas Perkins. His brother, Bruce (Marilyn) Mayall of Oaktown also survives as well as his farming buddy, Scott Hagemeier.
A memorial gathering will take place Sunday, July 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Oaktown Community Building.
Duesterberg-Frederick Funeral Home has served the family.
