Obituary for Rita Josephine( Lane) Shappard
Rita Josephine (Lane) Shappard, 90, of Vincennes passed away Saturday July 15, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born August 23, 1926 in Vincennes the daughter of Lawrence and Emma Holscher Lane. She attended Purcell School. She began her career working at St. Vincent Orphanage then worked at SS Kresge Dime Store. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church and was a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Hospital Pink Ladies. On May 25, 1948 she married Walter A. Shappard and they made their life together until his death on May 12, 1991. She had a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and faithfully prayed the rosary. After she could no longer attend church, she watched the celebration of the Mass and Mother Angelica on EWTN. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and a compassionate person to everyone she met.
She is survived by her children, Gloria Kiefner, and her husband Darrel of Vincennes, Carol Sievers, and her husband Randy of Newburgh, IN, Susan Mutin, and her husband John of Cordova, TN, Francis Shappard, and his wife Julie of Roswell, GA, Beth O’Dell, and her husband Tim of Vincennes and Michael Shappard, and his wife Ann of Jasper, IN. She was blessed with her grandchildren, Andy (Brandy) Sievers, J.W. Mutin, Hannah Shappard, Ben Shappard, Emma Shappard, Luke Shappard and Sam Shappard. Her great grandchild, Deacon Sievers. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and her very dear friend, Norma Halter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, a son, Paul Shappard, her parents, her brother and sisters, Edward M. Lane, Mary Helen Halter, Lucille Bailey and Dorothy F. Miller.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday July 20, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the St. John Catholic Church with Fr. David Fleck and Fr. Donald Ackerman officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Walter in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday July 19, 2017 from 4 to 7 PM at the Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home where the recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Good Samaritan Hospice, St. Vincent DePaul Society or the St. John Catholic Church.
