Rita A. (Bumgarner) Nowaskie, 84, of Vincennes passed away Sunday July 25, 2021 at her residence with her family at her bedside. Rita was born July 26, 1936 in Vincennes the daughter of Wayne L. and Mary A. Thomas Bumgarner. She was a graduate of St. Rose Academy and St. Mary of the Woods College where she graduated Magna Cum Laude receiving a double major degree in psychology and social work. She married Harold J. Nowaskie on June 14, 1956 and they made their life together for 56 years until his death on October 3, 2012. She was a lifetime member of St. John Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and a past member of the Southern Indiana Social Workers Assn. Rita worked at Knox County Jail, Willow Manor Nursing Home, served as director at Princeton Broadway Daycare, St. Peter’s Lutheran Daycare, was a substitute teacher at Rivet High School and was a elderly caretaker. She was a volunteer at Good Samaritan Hospital as a gray lady for 7 years and Flaget Elementary as a guidance counselor. She was a foster parent and was a home daycare operator.
Rita is survived by her family, Kathy Bahr, and her husband Richard of Terre Haute, IN, Eileen Trabant, and her husband Don of Oaktown, IN, Diane Wonning, and her husband Brad of Vincennes, Pam Hoke, and her husband Mike of Vincennes, IN, Dennis Nowaskie, and his wife Annette of Vincennes and Carolyn Brown, her companion Bill Gordon of Vincennes. 16 grandchildren, Jarrod Bahr, Marcia Crapo, Trish Bahr, Curtis Bahr, Nick Trabant, Elizabeth Trabant, Daniel Trabant, Audra Bezy, Jeff Wonning, Alan Wonning, Joshua Cummins, Tony Cummins, Victoria Crabtree, Mitchell Nowaskie, Dylan Brown and Breanna Brown. 24 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Tony Bumgarner of Chicago, IL and a sister Nancy Knoblett, and her husband Don of Palestine, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold J. Nowaskie, a great grandchild, Candice Cary, her parents, Wayne and Mary A. Bumgarner and a sister Mary E. "Betty" Bayne.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday July 30, 2021 at 10:00 AM at St. John Catholic Church with Fr. Tony Ernst officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Harold J. Nowaskie in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday July 29, 2021 at Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral Home.
