Obituary for William "Butch" Sutton

William Walter ‘Butch’ Sutton Sr., A U.S Army & Vietnam Veteran as well as Civil Service retiree and long-time baseball & softball umpire died suddenly at 81 years of age on July 23rd 2023 while living in Largo, Florida.  Butch is survived by his wife Lisa Craig of Largo, Florida, his sons; Butch Jr. of Hopkins, South Carolina & Andrew of Dixon, Missouri as well as his sister Shelia of Vincennes, Indiana.  He is predeceased by his mother Mary Ellen, father Ira Andrew, brothers; Tommie, Robert, Charles Edward ‘Eddie’ & Ira Lee.

Butch was born in rural Indiana outside of Vincennes on June 1st 1942 to Ira Andrew & Mary Ellen Sutton.  He graduated from Decker Chapel High School in 1961 and joined the United States Army in January of 1962 and upon graduation of basic military training at Fort Dix, New Jersey.  After completing his advanced individual training to be an Operating Room Specialist.


He would marry the former Susan L. Wilson of Vincennes Indiana and have two sons; William ‘Butch’ Jr. & Andrew Wayne.  He was also a proud grandpa to grandson Zachary William of Columbia South Carolina and granddaughter Leela Jo of Dixon Missouri.


His military service would see him serving in South Vietnam during the war, Fort Shafter, Hawaii,  Fort Bliss, Texas, Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenix, Pennsylvania, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Camp Humphreys, South Korea.  His awards included the National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze ‘Campaign’ Stars.

Butch was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan which he passed down to both of his sons, daughter in-laws & grandchildren.  He was also a devout Indiana University Basketball fan, a dedicated baseball & softball umpire, loved bass fishing on the Lake of the Ozarks and in the many rivers around Ft. Leonard Wood. Also Butch enjoyed squirrel & rabbit hunting, especially with his brothers.  He will be deeply missed by friends and family.


No services are scheduled.  His cremated remains will be laid to rest with his parents & brothers in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
