Obituary for James Joseph Combs

James J. Combs peacefully passed away on May 29, 2024, surrounded by his family. Jim was born on August 31, 1944, to Bernice Combs (Brown) and William Clinton Combs in Vincennes. He was a proud graduate of Vincennes Lincoln High School, Vincennes University, Purdue University, and Bradley University. Jim dedicated many years of his life as an adolescent psychologist at the Zeller Mental Health Center in Peoria, IL, before returning to Vincennes upon his retirement.


Jim was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Wilma Marchino, Doris Klasinski, and William Combs. A nephew, James Gard also preceded him in death. A proud Uncle and Great Uncle, Jim is survived by his nieces and nephews: Ellyn Gard Mills (Tom) of Evansville, IN; Cindy Marchino Wickens (Harry) of Lafayette, IN; Gail

Gard Foster (Don) of Vincennes; Nancy Marchino Irons of Villa Hills, KY; Jeananne Gard Matthews (Mike) of Fishers, IN; John Gard of Lakeland, FL; Brad Combs (Jennifer)of Aiken, SC; and Susan Combs Heil (Todd) of Atlanta, GA. Jim will also be fondly remembered by many great-nieces and nephews.


A graveside service in celebration of his life will take place at 1:00 PM on Friday June 7, 2024 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Chaplin Trevor Murray officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his mother. Memorial donations can be made in Jim’s honor to Good Samaritan Hospital or the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Indiana, 921 E 86th St #130, Indianapolis, IN 46240.
